In the midst of the pandemic where health care workers are sacrificing their lives for the safety of humanity, MUTEMUSE celebrates Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, a pioneering physician, as #MuseoftheMonth

Born in 1836, Anderson's attempt to study at a number of medical schools were denied. There were no precedents before her, so when she finally passed the exam, the society changed rules to prevent other women from taking medical exams and entering the profession.

Determined, she moved to Paris to obtain a medical degree from the University of Paris and became the only female member of the British Medical Association, which at first refused to recognise her qualification.

With anderson's determination to pave the way for other women, an act was passed permitting women to enter medical professions in 1876. Anderson, who even became the first female mayor in England, continues to inspire the empowerment of women against discrimination.
