“There was never a question in my mind that I wanted to climb that mountain, no matter what other people said.” In May 1975, Junko Tabei carved her spot in history when she became the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Against the social norm that expected women to stay home and “serve tea,” she coordinated all-women expedition to the Himalayas, and eventually ascended all Seven Summits by climbing the highest peak on every continent. She indeed broke new ground for women.
